Chapter Eighteen

The remainder of Sunday was uneventful. Jackson arrived with three bags of groceries. Jack Pierce arrived an hour later with two more. Lily stretched up from her pillow to notice the apples, bananas and blueberries. Jack had picked up some strawberries from a local grower as well as tomatoes and some large onions. She would eat sugar, but it would be from fresh fruit.

“I can get the grill going.” Jack grasped the package Danny had pulled. “Lily, I’m going to grill chicken too. Dan pulled these steaks. Will a salad and baked potato sound good to you?”

“Yes,” she called from her throne.

Jackson walked near her and touched her covered toes. “I did bring some ice cream. Dad said you like mint chocolate chip so that’s what I got. The peanut butter fudge is more my style--”

“Next time, please?” She fluttered her eyelashes at him.

Jackson laughed. “I’ll bring some tomorrow.”

Lily grimaced. “Do you have babysitting duty tomorrow too?”

“No, I’m fixing dinner for you. Dad will be with you tomorrow. You have a doc appointment, right?”

“Why do I need a calendar when I have you all?”

Jackson watched his father head outside. “Exactly. I know this is more than you signed on for, but just hang in there. What more can I do to make you more comfortable?”

Lily swung her legs down and removed the light blanket. “Help me upstairs so I can change out of these clothes?”

“Of course. I’ll just walk behind you to make sure you don’t fall down or up the stairs.”

“Thank you.” She really did appreciate his acceptance of her very little independence. By the time Lily reached the landing she had to rest and take a breath. “I don’t know what is going on with me today.”

Jackson rested his hand on her back. He still didn’t know much about Lily, but from what he had learned in Paris, and the hour he spent with her here and there, he admired her spirit. She wasn’t a complainer either. His buddy, Ari, absolutely adored her. Her expanding belly held his future nephew or niece. “You may have overdone it with all that is going on. You worked at my aunt’s yesterday. Today, you really do need to rest. Let us do whatever needs to be done.”

“The trash and recyclables need to go out tonight. They collect early on Monday mornings.” Lily could move again. “I’m good, but I need to get out of these clothes.”

Jackson followed her into the bedroom. The large suite featured a nice sitting area in front of the main windows. He found one of the chairs to wait for her. She walked into the closet and pulled out clothing. Jackson saw a wedding photo on one wall, along with other family photos. It was inexcusable that he wasn’t there. Devlin and he only had each other. Distance always kept them apart, at least that’s what he told himself.

He continued his examination of the blended room. He could see a mix of Lily and his brother. Dev’s side of the bed had a table with a brass lamp, a couple of books, and a charger.
